MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Former Vermont state legislator Edgar May, who won a Pulitzer Prize during his earlier career at the Buffalo Evening News, has died.

May's sister, former Gov Madeleine Kunin, tells Vermont Public Radio the 83-year-old May had suffered a stroke about three weeks ago, and died Thursday in Tuscon, Ariz., where he kept a winter home.

During the 1960s, May worked as a reporter at the Buffalo Evening News in New York state, and won a Pulitzer Prize for an investigation of the state's welfare system.

He later moved to the southern Vermont town of Springfield, and was elected to the Statehouse in the 1970s and four times to the Senate in the 1980s. He served as chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the Senate. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
