Good news for cross-country ski areas

Posted: Updated:
WILLISTON, Vt. -

After only being open for cross-country skiing for about 10 to 12 days last winter, the Catamount Outdoor Family Center in Williston was welcoming skiers Thursday morning.

The nonprofit is open year-round for mountain biking and hiking, but cross-country skiing is very important when it comes to meeting its bottom line. Catamount does not make snow, because it says it is just too low in elevation, so its ski business depends on Mother Nature.

"So, it's really important and extra helpful since we are still in the heart of the vacation week which is potentially a really busy time anyway. So, the fact we have snow at all is a gift at this point," said Eric Bowker of Catamount Outdoor Family Center.

When it comes to grooming, Catamount says it's done the old-fashioned way-- two guys with snowmobiles.

Sue and Steve Miyamoto of Essex were excited to be at Catamount. They said it was a cool way to be outside together celebrating their 37th anniversary.
