Bradford woman denies killing estranged boyfriend on Christmas

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -

A tearful Anne-Marie Whiteway could spend the rest of her life behind bars. The 51-year-old woman is charged with second-degree murder for the Christmas day shooting of her estranged boyfriend, Dale Rock, 43. The Bradford mom mouthed the words "I didn't do it" to her family sitting in the courtroom in White River Junction.

"And she's pleading not guilty," Whiteway's lawyer, Daniel Sedon, told the judge.

Police say the evidence against Whiteway is staggering, including two eyewitness accounts. Prosecutors told the court Whiteway was upset Rock recently dumped her for her sister-in-law, Stephanie Plante. Plante told police Whiteway showed up at Rock's house Christmas night and tried to attack her, before killing Rock.

"Miss Whiteway reaches towards something around her waist and says to Miss Plante, 'Whore, you are the reason he is going to die.' She describes three to four sounds-- pop, pop, pop-- after which Miss Whiteway left the scene," Orange County Deputy State's Attorney Michael Kainen said.

Whiteway told police she drove her brother to Rock's place, a converted shed in Newbury, but claims she didn't kill him, even telling them she heard the shots as she was getting back into her car.

"Upon learning that Mr. Rock is dead she offers the idea that it might have been her brother, Michael Plante, who was also Stephanie Plante's estranged husband," Kainen said.

Police say the evidence doesn't support her story. Vt. Superior Court Judge Robert Gerety agreed.

"The court finds that the evidence of guilt in this matter is great," the judge said.

He ordered her held without bail. A ruling Whiteway's sons say is unjust.

"My mom's a harmless woman," said Mark Deane, Whiteway's son. "She's sitting in jail right now because of a guy who beat her ass. He deserved to die if you ask me. I care about human life. Not when you beat someone down like that over and over."

They say their mom is not capable of murder and vow to stick by her side as she fights for her freedom.

"She always treated us kids like gold and I don't believe she would ever do anything like that," said Alexander Pape, Whiteway's son. "All of her court dates; we'd love to be there just try to be there for her the best we can."

Police wouldn't comment specifically on the domestic violence allegations, but said they had several interactions with the couple during their 8-year relationship. They also said Dale Rock had a lengthy criminal record including violent and nonviolent offenses.
