TAMPA, Fla. -

Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, the commander in chief of the first Gulf War in 1991, has died from pneumonia.

The general's sister, Ruth Barenbaum, lives in East Middlebury. She was the focus of a WCAX News Super Senior segment in September. Barenbaum said it was a blessing because he has been ill for awhile.

She said the Gulf War was the first time a war was seen live on TV and Schwarzkopf was a comfort for the entire nation.

Schwarzkopf lived in Tampa, Fla. He was 78.
