BURLINGTON, Vt. -

>>> FROM VERMONT'S MOST TRUSTED NEWS SOURCE. WCAX BRINGS YOU YOUR NEWSMAKERS, YOUR NEIGHBORS, THIS IS "YOU CAN QUOTE ME."

>>> AND GOOD MORNING! THIS SUNDAY, OUR REPORTERS PICK THEIR FAVORITE STORIES OF 2012, AND WE BEGIN WITH THE STORY THAT MADE NATIONAL HEADLINES.

>> THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED WHEN A BEAR GOVERNOR HAD A RUN-IN WITH BEARS.

>> THE CALL GOES OUT EACH SPRING FROM THE VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE. TAKE DOWN YOUR BIRD FEEDERS SO YOU DON'T ATTRACT BACKYARD BEARS. ALMOST EVERY YEAR, PEOPLE FORGET. EVEN THE GOVERNOR. HE HAD A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WEDNESDAY NIGHT WITH FOUR BEARS.

>> I THOUGHT I GOT TO GET THEM OUT OF HERE, GET THOSE BIRD FEEDERS IN OR THEY ARE GOING TO COME BACK EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. PRETTY DUMB OF ME NOT TO BRING THE BIRD FEEDERS IN, BUT I GOT IN LATE.

>> THE GOVERNOR SHOT FOOTAGE OF THE BEARS FROM INSIDE THE HOME HE RENTS IN MONTPELIER ON HIS iPHONE. HE WOULD NOT RELEASE THE VIDEO TO US, BUT HE DID SHOW ME.

>> YOU CAN SEE RIGHT THERE.

>> THERE'S THE PORCH.

>> SEE THE BEAR STARTING TO MOVE RIGHT AROUND THE TREE.

>> YEP.

>> TURNS OUT THIS WAS A MOTHER BEAR AND AT LEAST TWO CUBS ON THE PORCH. THE GOVERNOR YESTERDAY OUT THE WINDOW TO SCARE THEM AWAY THEN WENT OUT TO GET THE FEEDERS.

>> THE BIGGEST BEAR IS RUNNING A LONG DISTANCE AWAY, STARTS TEARING FOR THE PORCH AS I'M GETTING THE OTHER TWO FEEDERS. I GRAB THEM AND TEAR FOR THE PORCH DOOR, AND LITERALLY, IT WAS SEVEN FEET FROM THE DOOR WHEN I SLAMMED IN. I THOUGHT THAT BEAR IS COMING RIGHT THROUGH.

>> GRAY STEVENS IS AN OUTDOOR GUIDE. HE SAID APPROACHING WILD BEARS IS VERY DANGEROUS.

>> IF THERE ARE CUBS AROUND, DON'T MESS WITH THEM AT ALL. YOU DON'T GO NEAR THEM ANYWHERE NEAR THEM.

>> ESPECIALLY UNPREPARED IN TT MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.

>> JUST PUT IT THIS WAY: REAL VERMONT BOYS DON'T WEAR PAJAMAS. SO THE BEAR WAS BETTER DRESSED THAN ME.

>> THERE'S A VISUAL FOR YOU. THE GOVERNOR SAID HE'S LEARNED HIS LESSON. THE BEARS AND BARE FEET AND BARELY NOTHING.

>> IT IS A BEAR OF A STORY. LESSON OF A STORY: DON'T FEED BIRDS THIS TIME OF YEAR.

>> OKAY. I AM NOT SURE WHAT TO SAY. WELL, A WILD ENCOUNTER FOR A ROCKFORD MAN WHEN A MOOSE CHARGED HIM AND HIS MOUSE -- HIS HOUSE.

>> THE WHOLE THING WAS CAUGHT ON CAMERA. MATT HENSON REPORTS.

>> NEXT TO MY CAR, AND IT APPEARED TO BE WANTING TO GO OVER MY CAR.

>> IT WAS NOT WHAT BRENT OLSON EXPECTED TO SEE WHEN HE WOKE UP AT HIS HOME IN WESTFORD SUNDAY MORNING. A BULL MOOSE WITH A HOOF ON HIS CAR.

>> I HAD RUN OUT IN MY SHORTS IN THE MORNING AND STARTED YELLING AT IT, SAYING DO NOT JUMP ON MY CAR, MR. MOOSE!

>> AFTER CHASING IT AWAY FROM HIS VEHICLE, OLSON WAS INTRIGUED BY THE UP CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH THE MOOSE. HE GRABBED HIS CAMCORDER AS IT WALKED AROUND HIS YARD.

>> A MOOSE WITH IVY IN ITS HORNGS, I THOUGHT IT WAS CUTE.

>> THE MOOSE'S BEHAVIOR BECAME ANYTHING BUT CUTE.

>> SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME.

>> THE 59-YEAR-OLD RAN FOR SAFETY INSIDE HIS HOME. LEAVING THE CAMCORDER OUTSIDE. APPARENTLY THE MOOSE WANTED TO GO INSIDE THE HOME, TOO.

>> MY ROOMMATE HAD GONE INTO HIS BEDROOM AND HAD HIS 32 SPECIAL RIFLE OUT, AND HE SAID IF IT COMES THROUGH THE WINDOW, HE WAS GOING TO DEFEND THE HOUSE.

>> OLSON AND HIS ROOMMATE WAITED AN HOUR FOR THE NEAREST GAME WARDEN TO ARRIVE, THEY SAY THE MOOSE CHARGED THE HOME FOUR MORE TIMES.

>> VERY NERVE-RACKING TO HOPE THAT THIS THING WAS GOING TO BEHAVE ITSELF UNTIL THE GAME WARDEN GOT HERE.

>> NEVER SEEN A MOOSE ACT LIKE THAT.

>> AFTER OBSERVING IT FOR A PERIOD OF TIME, A STATE GAME WARDEN KILLED THE MOOSE, SAYING IT EXITED SIGNS OF BRAIN WORMS. THE PARASITE CAUSES ODD BEHAVIOR, LIKE WALKING IN TIGHT CIRCLES.

>> IT CAN ALSO MAKE THE ANIMALS OFF BALANCE AND CAUSE THEIR HEADS TO TILT. WARDENS SAY APPROACHING WILD ANIMALS IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA.

>> WE RECOMMEND PEOPLE KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE FROM ANY WILDLIFE, NO MATTER WHAT SIZE IT IS OF THE. ALL WILDLIFE CAN BE DANGEROUS, BIG OR SMALL.

>> IT IS VERY SAD TO SEE SUCH A HEALTHY, BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL SUFFER FROM SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

>> A LESSON NOW, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL FOR BRENT OLSON. MATT HENSON, CHANNEL 3 NEWS, WESTFORD.

>>> WOW.

>> WOW.

>> WELL, A PRISONER PRANK HAD PEOPLE TALKING. INMATES TASKED WITH MAKING THE OFFICIAL SEAL FOR STATE CRUISERS TOOK LIBERTIES WITH THE DESIGN.

>> OF COURSE AS PEOPLE KNOW, POLICE OFFICERS CAN OFTEN BE CALLED A LOT OF NAMES, BUT INMATES APPARENTLY DECIDED TO USE THEIR CREATIVE SIDE, MAKING SURE THAT PIGS MADE THEIR WAY ONTO THE STATE'S SEAL FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE SEAL WAS FIRST DESIGNED, MORE THAN THREE CENTURIES AGO. HUNDREDS OF CRUISERS PATROL THE STATE WITH THE STATE SEAL STANDING OUT ON BOTH FRONT DOORS. THE SEAL WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED BY IRA ALLEN IN THE 1770S. A TREE, MOUNTAINS AND A COW TO HONOR DAIRY FARMING IN VERMONT. FOUR YEARS AGO THE STATE WANTED MORE DECALS FOR CRUISERS, GIVING THE JOB TO THE PRISON PRINT SHOP IN WINDSOR. INMATES WERE SUPPOSED TO LOAD THE STATE'S CREST IMAGE IN AS GIVEN TO THEM. BUT SOMEONE DECIDED TO MAKE A MAJOR CHANGE. PAYBACK, PERHAPS. THIS IS WHAT THE COW SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE ON THE DECAL. BUT NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE ON THE NEW DECAL. ONE OF THE COW'S SPOTS IS ACTUALLY A PIG. PIG IS A DEROGATORY TERM FOR POLICE. A STATE TROOPER IN SOUTHERN VERMONT JUST NOTICED THE ALTERED ART WORK.

>> THEY APOLOGIZED. I THINK IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT SOMEBODY TOOK IT UPON THEMSELVES TO REACH OUT AND DO THIS TO THEM.

>> CORRECTIONS COMMISSIONER ANDY POLITO SAID THE DECALS WERE RECENTLY PUT ON CRUISERS, AS MANY AS 30 HAVE THE PRANKSTER PIGS.

>> WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE DO A BETTER JOB OF QUALITY A INSURANCE IN THE FUTURE, MAKE SURE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN.

>> STATE POLICE AREN'T LAUGHING, EITHER. IN A STATEMENT, MAJOR BILL SHEET SAID, QUOTE, WHILE SOME MAY FIND HUMOR IN THE DECAL MODIFICATIONS, THE JOKE UNFORTUNATELY COMES AT THE EXPENSE OF THE TAXPAYERS. POLITO EXPECTS THE BILL TO REPLACE THE OFFEND GD SWINE $800. -- OFFENDING SWINE.

>> AND THE PRISONER WHO DID THAT PRANK WERE NEVER FOUND.

>>> POLICE ON THE HUNT FOR THE HAAS. FROM TV SHOWS LIKE "KNIGHT RIDER" AND BAYWATCH.

>> IT DOES SEEM THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT DAVID HASSELHOFF THAT'S TOO MUCH FOR SOME CONVENIENCE STORE CUSTOMERS TO TAKE. THEY ARE TAKING HIM. KRISTIN KELLY REPORTS.

>> WHO KNEW THAT THE COMBINATION OF BAYWATCH STAR DAVID HASSELHOFF AND A CONTRACT WITH CUMBERLAND FARMS TO SELL ICED COFFEE, THAT'S WITH AN HAD.

>> -- WITH AN H WOULD TURN CUSTOMERS INTO CRIMINALS.

>> HE IS IN HIS 60s, BUT LOOKS LIKE HE'S IN IT HIS 30s WITH LOVELY GOLDEN WAVES OF HAIR AND PIERCING BLUE EYES. RECENTLY WENT MISSING FROM TWO LOCATIONS.

>> THIEVES HIT BOTH CUMBERLAND FARMS IN BURLINGTON, SWIPING BIG CUT OUTS OF THE HEARTTHROBS. ONE OF THE STORES HAD HAD ONE LEFT AND BRAUTD IT OUT OF HIDING SEW WE COULD SEE -- BROUGHT IT OUT OF HIDING.

>> IT IS CRAZY.

>> WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE HASS THAT WOULD MAKE SOMEBODY WANT TO BREAK THE LAW?

>> I THINK FOR MANY DECADES THE HASS HAS HELD AN AMAZING ABILITY TO JUST WOW PEOPLE. AND I THINK THAT HE JUST WINS PEOPLE OVER. THEY CAN'T THINK CLEARLY WHEN THEY SEE HIM.

>> I MEAN, HE'S PROBABLY LIKE, I DON'T KNOW, PROBABLY THE KING OF BOTOX, IF HE LOOKS THAT GOOD.

>> I TURNS OUTER VERMONT THIEVES AREN'T THE ONLY ONES HOT FOR THE HASS. CUMBERLAND FARMS SAID OF THE MORE THAN 500 CUT-OUTS PUT IN STORES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, ONLY 20 LEFT.

>> NOT EVERYONE IS IS A FAN.

>> I CAN'T IMAGINE. [ LAUGHS ]

>> I DON'T WANT IT.

>> CUMBERLAND FARMS RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING WE TAKE CUSTOMERS' FONDNESS FOR THE AD AS A COMPLIMENT. HASSELHOFF HIMSELF IS SURPRISED BY THE THEFTS, EVEN TELLING BOSTON TV STATION WHAD HDH THAT AT FIRST -- WHDT HE WAS CONFUSED BY THE REPORTS.

>> THE FIRST THING I THOUGHT OF WAS THAT I WAS IN TROUBLE, AND THEN I SAID, OH, GOOD, THEY ARE NOT ACCUSING ME OF STEALING, THEY ARE ACCUSING ME OF PEOPLE STEALING ME.

>> AS FOR BURLINGTON POLICE, THEY ARE WORKING TO BRING THE HASS BACK SAFELY.

>> I MYSELF WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A LIFE-SIZED HASS IN MY HOME, BUT IT IS STILL A CRIME.

>> CHRIS TIB KELLY, CHANNEL -- KRISTIN KELLY, CHANNEL 3 NEWS, BURLINGTON.

>> YEP.

>> THESE IMPRESSIVE MOVES AREN'T FREESTYLE. SHE CHOREOGRAPHED EACH WALK.

>> IS IT ABOUT LOOKING GOOD?

>> NO.

>> THAT'S BECAUSE THIS IS ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN DANCING. THIS IS DONNA MARIE'S STORY OF SURVIVAL.

>> THEY DIDN'T KNOW I HAD A TUMOR FOR MANY YEARS.

>> DOCTORS REMOVED HER TUMOR. WHEN SHE WOKE UP FROM BRAIN SURM -- SURGERY, HER MEMORY WAS ERASED. LEAVING HER TO SURVIVE WITH A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY.

>> I COULDN'T WALK, I COULDN'T TALK.

>> SINCE 2005, SHE SLOWLY STARTED LEARNING EVERYTHING ALL OVER. AND SAYS EXERCISE IS KEY TO HER HEALTH NOW. IN THE BEGINNING, JUST WALKING SLOWLY, THEN A LITTLE FASTER.

>> THEN I STARTED SPEED-WALKING, AND THEN I STARTED DANCING IT.

>> HERE ARE A FEW RULES THE DANCE WORKER HAS TO FOLLOW. ONE: THERE HAS TO BE GOOD MUSIC.

>> TWO, YOU HAVE TO LIFT YOUR FEET AND MOVE ALL YOUR MUSCLES AT THE SAME TIME. AND THREE, HAVE FUN.

>> ISN'T IT FUN? [ LAUGHS ]]

>> DONNA MARIE STILL HAS DOUBLE VISION AND A LIMP, AND SHE SAYS SHE ACTUALLY DRAWS LESS ATTENTION BY DANCING INSTEAD OF WALKING.

>> WHEN I WALK WITHOUT MY GLASSES, PEOPLE THINK I'M DRUNK.

>> THIS 57-YEAR-OLD DANCE WALKER MOVES ALONG LIKE A WELL-TRAINED 70s ROLLER SKATER WITH A SMILE. NOW I KNOW YOU'RE WONDERING, WHAT IS IN THOSE HEADPHONES THAT GET HER TO MOVE LIKE THAT? WE WERE THINKING THIS -- SHE'S A MANIAC, MANIAC ON THE FLOOR

>> OR THIS. NIGHT FEVER

>> BUT ACTUALLY, THE WINNER IS BOB GILLY.

>> I HAVE TO ADMIT, THIS IS WHAT WAS IN MY HEAD WHEN WE WERE DANCING. I JUST MET YOU, THIS IS CRAZY

>> ANOTHER FAVORITE TUNE OF THE DANCE-WALKER. DONNA MARIE KNOWS THAT THINGS DON'T ALWAYS PLAY OUT LIKE YOU HOPE. SHE HAS A NEW TUMOR IN OUR BRAIN STEM, AND DOCTORS SAY SHE MAY ONLY HAVE FIVE YEARS TO LIVE. BUT EVEN THIS TOUGH NEWS DOESN'T STOP HER.

>> HOW DO YOU KEEP SUCH A GOOD ATTITUDE?

>> THAT'S MY PERSONALITY. THAT'S MY PERSONALITY. I ACCEPT THINGS THE WAY THEY ARE.

>> I THINK SO. IF THEY DON'T, THEY'D BETTER.

>> THERE'S NO DOUBT THAT OF THE 130 SENIOR RESIDENTS KNOW GLADYS DUVALL.

>> I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SLEEP ONCE IN A WHILE, BUT PEOPLE KEEP KNOCKING ON YOUR DOOR.

>> IF THIS WAS A HIGH SCHOOL, SHE WOULD WIN THE MISS POPULARITY CONTEST.

>> I AM VERY OUTSPOKEN.

>> SHE WOULD ALSO GET THE PRIZE FOR SOMETHING ELSE.

>> YOU KNOW YOU ARE THE OLDEST PERSON IN THIS BUILDING.

>> I AM!

>> HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

>> LITTLE SUPERIOR. [ LAUGHTER ]

>> SHE'S JUST A FEW WEEKS SHY OF HER 103RD BIRTHDAY.

>> I DON'T FEEL OLD. I DON'T FEEL OLD AT ALL.

>> GLADYS WAS BORN IN 1909 AND GREW UP IN MONTGOMERY CENTER, RIGHT AT THE FOOT OF JAY PEAK.

>> WE HAD NO WATER, WE HAD TO PUMP IT. BET YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO PUMP ANY WATER.

>> IT WAS FIGURESLY HARD -- PHYSICALLY HARD, MADE EASIER IN A LOVING HOUSEHOLD, BUT THERE WAS A FAMILY SECRET.

>> I WAS ADOPTED.

>> YOU WERE?

>> YES. AND I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT UNTIL I WAS 21.

>> SHE WAS WORKING AT THE TOWN OFFICE AND WANTED TO SEE HER BIRTH CERTIFICATE. SHE ASKED HER MOTHER ABOUT IT. HER MOTHER BEGAN TO CRY.

>> SEAN KUHN AND HIS FAMILY SPENT A FEW MINUTES ENJOYING WEDNESDAY EVENING BY THE BANKS. WHITE RIVER IN ROCHESTER. WHEN HE WAS JUST A HANDFUL OF YEARS OLDER THAN HIS 3-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, HE AND A PAL EACH STUFFED A HANDWRITTEN NOTE IN A GLASS BOTTLE BEFORE SENDING IT AFLOAT DOWN RIVER IN THIS VERY SPOT.

>> BEFORE I RECEIVED THIS LETTER, I HADN'T THOUGHT ABOUT IT IN YEARS. I HAD NO IDEA THAT I WOULD GET IT BACK, THAT'S FOR SURE.

>> THERE'S NO WAY OF KNOWING HOW OR IF THE BOTTLE GOT LODGED SOMEWHERE ALONG THE RIVER MORE THAN 35 YEARS AGO, BUT SEAN BELIEVES HURRICANE IRENE DISLODGED IT BEFORE IT POPPED UP MORE THAN 70 MILES DOWN RIVER.

>> I FOUND THIS IT BOTTLE, AND I SAW THE NOTE.

>> 14-YEAR-OLD JUSTIN SHEPHERD STUMBLED UPON THE BOTTLE AS HE AND HIS DAD EXPLORED THE AREA BENEATH THE BELLOWS FALL DAM. IT LACKED A CORK SHALL AND THOUGH SOGGY, TIME AND WATER EXPOSURE DIDN'T ERASE THE NOTE, THE WRITER'S NAME AND PHONE NUMBER.

>> I TRIED CALLING THE NUMBER, BUT IT DIDN'T WORK AT ALL.

>> SO HE POPPED THE DIGITS INTO GOOGLE. THAT'S WHEN HE REALIZED WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS AN R IN SEAN'S LAST NAME IS ACTUALLY AN N. BEFORE LONG, HE PUT A COPY OF THE NOTE IN AN ENVELOPE, AND SENT IT TO SEAN. IT ARRIVED TUESDAY NIGHT.

>> FOR MUSIC LEGENDS AND INFLUENTIAL FIGURES, TO THE MORE GENERIC AND MAYBE FUTURE ICONS.

>> AND HAVE BEEN, EVEN DURING THE BREAKUP IN 2004. FIVE YEARS LATER, THEY REUNITED BACK ON TOUR, BACK TO MAKING MUSIC, AND SINCE THEN, IT'S ONLY GOTTEN BETTER.

>> WE'RE CLOSER NOW TAN ANY TIME IN OUR 30 YEARS. IT'S ACTUALLY GOTTEN TIGHTER, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE BROKE UP AND GOT BACK TOGETHER. I THINK THERE'S A NEW LEVEL OF APPRECIATION AND IT JUST FEELS MORE FUN THAN I CAN REMEMBER SINCE THE HOLD DAYS.

>> PHISH'S GENEROSITY HAS HELPED TO CHANGE PEOPLE'S PERCEPTION OF THE BAND.

>> THE FANS ARE EXTREMELY GENEROUS. I THINK THEY HAVE BEEN, ESPECIALLY BACK IN THE DAY, THERE WAS A DIFFERENT STEER YOTYPE OF WHAT PHISH FANS WOULD BE -- STEREOTYPE. THERE WERE COMMUNITIES THAT HAD CONCERNS WHEN THE BAND WOULD TOUR THROUGH. BUT THERE WAS ALWAYS AN AFTER, YOU KNOW, AFTER THE FACT OF, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE WERE WORRIED ABOUT, THESE GUYS WERE GREAT, YOU KNOW. THIS IS A GREAT FAN BASE. AND THEY ARE. THEY REALLY ARE.
