January 2011WESTMORE, Vt. (AP) - Dozens of people are ringing in the new year by plunging into an icy-cold northern Vermont lake to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The ninth annual Willoughby Lake Dip Relay For Life fundraiser takes place Tuesday afternoon in Westmore.
Organizer Fred Laferriere told the Caledonian-Record that 68 people took the plunge last year, raising $18,000. He says the lake waters are usually about 34 degrees.
Laferriere organized the event after his brother died of cancer in 2000.
