SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A sad start to the new year for a pet owner after a bus fire Tuesday.

The bus from Gulliver's Doggie Daycare was making an afternoon run in South Burlington when the driver smelled smoke. Police say by the time he was able to pull over at the corner of Williston and Hinesburg roads, the vehicle was filling with smoke and flames.

"Two dogs were in the bus; one made it out, one did not. The driver, he got a little smoke inhalation and also maybe some burns on the back of his jacket and the back of his head," South Burlington Police Sgt. James Mills said.

A police officer and a passerby also suffered smoke inhalation while attempting to rescue the dog trapped on board.

No word yet on what might have caused the fire.
