LOWELL, Vt. -
Residents in Lowell spent New Year's Day playing basketball for a cause.
Eighteen two-man teams squared off at Lowell Graded School to raise money for the victims of last month's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
The tournament was organized by the town's basketball coach and a pro trainer from Irasburg. Together the community raised $800.
"Money obviously cannot replace or repair the loss that they are feeling, but our biggest thing was just to show them that us in the Northeast Kingdom do care and do send our support and we're thinking of them," said Shannon Charland, the basketball coach at Lowell Graded School.
The tournament organizers say all of the proceeds will go directly to the victims' families.
