SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -
South Burlington officials have given the go-ahead for a new drug treatment clinic near a pair of city schools.
The South Burlington Development Review Board voted 4-2 to deny an appeal from the city school district. School officials and parents argued the treatment facility the HowardCenter planned for 364 Dorset Street would be too close to the middle school and high school.
Supporters say the clinic will help meet the demand for methadone to help ease addictions to heroin and prescription painkillers.
In a statement, Bob Bick and Toddy Centybear of the
HowardCenter said, "HowardCenter is glad that the DRB has decided to
uphold the permit for interior renovations to the proposed re-located opiate
addiction treatment clinic at 364 Dorset Street in South Burlington. We
identified this location as being well suited to house a medical outpatient
treatment facility, and the DRB decision confirms that this medical office use
conforms with South Burlington Planning and Zoning regulations."
