Red Cross kicks off National Blood Donor Month

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The Red Cross is kicking off National Blood Donor Month Friday.

Red Cross and city officials gathered at the donation center in Burlington to kick off their partnership with the local Dunkin' Donuts for their "give a pint, get a pound" of coffee promotion. Doctors were on hand to explain the multitude of uses for the blood, and some even rolled up their sleeves to donate.

WCAX's Molly Smith explained how a friend's need for blood keeps her on a regular donation schedule. And a Fletcher Allen nurse shared how a rare blood disease turned her into recipient of more than 40 pints of blood in less than 6 months.

"My family members and co-workers have stepped up and everyone has come either to a donation canter or some something as a donation," said Nancy Pearce, a blood recipient.

"There tends to be a lot of skiing accidents and snowboarding accidents with the winter weather, as well as automobile accidents that tend to spike the need for donations, as well. January seems to be a difficult month for us," said Mike Kempesty of the Red Cross.

The promotion runs through the end of the month.
