Shumlin aims to reduce recidivism

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Governor Peter Shumlin Monday outlined a proposal for reducing recidivism by enhancing the prison education and training programs.

The plan would combine the prison high school and the correctional industries program under a new umbrella called Corrections Education. Those programs will be redefined and augmented to better prepare inmates to transition back into society. The governor estimates these improvements will further reduce the number of repeat offenders and save the state $600,000 a year.
