Upstate NY man involved in armed standoff dies

Posted: Updated:

HOOSICK, N.Y. (AP) - Officials at an Albany hospital say a 44-year-old upstate New York man who shot himself in the head during an armed standoff with police has died.

A spokeswoman for Albany Medical Center Hospital tells the Times Union of Albany that Keith Gates died on Tuesday.

State police said he was in grave condition when he was taken to the hospital following Monday's eight-hour standoff at his home in the Rensselaer County town of Hoosick, on the Vermont border 30 miles northeast of Albany.

Troopers say they were called to the home after Gates fired shots and threatened to hurt others.

After hours of negotiating with Gates, police eventually sent robotic surveillance equipment into the home and found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.
