Slopeside with Nick Borelli: Bolton Valley

Posted: Updated:

As we approach the middle of winter, many area ski resorts are in good shape. Bolton Valley has already received nearly 10 feet of snow this season. Skiers and riders are taking notice.

"It's that distinctive crunch of natural snow versus manmade and there's obviously a ton of natural snow here," said Mark Kenney of Springfield, Mass.

"It's great today. It's really gorgeous. The snow is awesome. It's not icy. It's beautiful," said Gina Koenemann of Germany.

Bolton Valley is currently skiing on at least 45 trails, with more terrain possibly opening up in time for the weekend. Cold temperatures and bouts of natural snowfall have made for some great packed powder surfaces. However, we do have some warmer weather later this week.

"We've been getting snow for the last 3 or 4 weeks and there's a good base depth out there. I think that our trails will hold up really well and I think with the warm weather people are gonna be motivated to come out on the mountain and enjoy some of that warmer weather; just shed a layer and enjoy a little bit of spring skiing preview here in January, so I think it's gonna be great," said Josh Arneson of Bolton Valley.

January is national learn to ski and snowboard month. This means some area ski resorts are offering special pricing on lessons and rental equipment. We caught up with some folks learning to make some turns on the slopes of Bolton.

"I've always wanted to try snowboarding. It's pretty ideal. There's great deals on ski passes here, so I thought I'm gonna come here and try it out for a bit," said Tim Bevis of Australia.

Even though learning to ski or ride can be challenging, those who do are enjoying it.

"A little hard. I fell down once. And most of all it's really fun," said Jake Bowen of Williston.

Regardless of your ability level, with all of the natural snow now is a great time to find any excuse to hit the slopes.

"It's worth taking a Tuesday off and calling in sick. Me and a buddy came up here for a beautiful Tuesday on the slopes. It's not crowded, it's beautiful and the snow is fantastic," Kenney said.

Even though there is a warm-up in the forecast there are some signs that the weather could turn cold again later this month.
