Changes are coming to most of Vermont's 140 post offices.
At a meeting Wednesday in Bridport, USPS officials asked residents for input on how to cut back hours without hurting service at the only post office in town.
It is just one of about 60 meetings scheduled for towns across the state this month. Daily window hours will likely be cut to 6 hours a day in Bridport -- but other towns could see more drastic changes -- like being open just two hours a day. The meeting was called to hear results of a survey the postal service sent to Bridport residents. Officials say any changes are expected to come 30 to 45 days after the public meeting and schedule changes could become a yearly event.
"This will be on going. For every year now we're going to evaluate each post office, evaluate work load, and try to balance what work load is with hours and expense of keeping it open," said Walter Rowland, United State Postal Service.
Rowland says the postal service is losing roughly 25 million dollars each day in large part due to a decrease in sales and a pre-funded pension program they hope Congress will put a stop to in the upcoming session.
