PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says the state will sponsor a national rafting and paddling competition in the Adirondacks.
It's part of his plan to help market and promote tourism in upstate communities. Cuomo said in his State of the State Wednesday that the new event, called the Adirondack Whitewater Challenge, will focus international attention on the recreational opportunities of the Adirondacks.
"He embraced the Adirondack challenge as really one step in what will be a several year, multifaceted strategy for the Adirondacks. We don't even have to compete for that, we're doing that, he's behind it," said Garry Douglas of the North Country Chamber of Commerce.
Cuomo said the marketing plan will help more tourists discover the Adirondack Park's world-class fishing, canoeing, kayaking and whitewater rafting.
