Gov. Cuomo's casino idea gets support

Posted: Updated:

A casino proposal from Gov. Andrew Cuomo is receiving support from some in upstate New York.

The casinos could be a potential big economic boost for the North Country.

The idea is stop the eight million New York City residents and 50 million annual visitors to the city from going to neighboring states to gamble.

Towns would get to weigh in on whether they want a casino in their community, and officials in Tupper Lake say they support the idea.

"We know that there are casinos not far from where we're standing today that are taking a lot of money out of our economy," says Tupper Lake Mayor Paul Maroun.

Ninety percent of the profits would go to the state education fund, and the other 10 percent would provide local tax relief.
