BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE, N.Y. (AP) - Public access to a historic canoe carry near the Adirondack hamlet of Blue Mountain Lake has been assured by a land preservation group.
The Open Space Institute has bought the Marion River Carry and 295 surrounding acres in Hamilton County in the headwaters of the Raquette River.
There has been concern in recent years after the land owner announced plans to build several homes along nearby Utowana Lake. He promised to leave the carry trail intact and publicly accessible. But some feared it might one day be closed.
The 4½-mile Marion River connects Blue Mountain Lake to Raquette Lake via Utowana Lake and Eagle Lake. It's a popular canoe route.
Canoeists and kayakers use the Marion River Carry trail to carry their boats around rapids.
