With each ping of Rebecca Mikan's hammer, meaningful sayings become wearable art.
Reporter Gina Bullard: What is it about words that draw people in?
Rebecca Mikan: I think people seek inspiration, maybe a quote or their grand mothers name and date of birth and someone wants to make that into something they can look at every day and reflect upon.
Her business, White Lilie Designs, makes everything from necklaces to guitar picks -- each one hand stamped by Mikan with a quote or personalized. From a birth date to an anniversary to a meaningful quote, Mikan likes helping people mark big memories and moments.
But it's not all personal -- there are universal quotes that seem to touch many people. A Doctor Seuss quote about the future is very popular. And this saying -- "Thank you for raising the man of my dreams."
"That was an order someone requested and I thought I'm going to list this and see where it goes. It's proved to be a popular gift for mother-in-law gifts or weddings," Mikan said.
Mikan wasn't always into jewelry design. She went to college for theater and started working at a nature center. The center wanted to raise money by selling jewelry and asked if anyone wanted to try making it -- Mikan raised her hand. She then started selling her designs in people's homes and realized it could be a full time business.
Reporter Gina Bullard: Are you ever walking around and hear something and say, oh that's a good one!
Rebecca Mikan: Yes. We actually have a stack of fortune cookie fortunes.
Now trained in silver smithing and stamping she sells her products on Etsy. Every day she's raking in up to 70 orders. She has one employee who helps her pack and ship.
"In the past two years I've sold over 6,000 individual items -- and that's not my corporate items," Mikan said.
