ALBANY, N.Y. -
New York lawmakers have approved the nation's first and toughest gun control laws in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre.
The bill calls for a tougher assault weapons ban and measures to keep guns away from the mentally ill. It also sets restrictions on ammunition and the sale of guns.
The bi-partisan legislation passed the Senate and the Assembly Tuesday.
North Country Senator Betty Little voted against the bill. She said it contained a lot of good measures, but thinks lawmakers should have taken more time to consider the impact on lawful gun owners.
