Police find body of NY man who broke through ice

Posted: Updated:

MASSENA, N.Y. (AP) - Police say they've recovered the body of a northern New York man missing since his snowmobile broke through the ice on a river near the Canadian border.

State police divers searching a stretch of the Grasse River outside Massena found the body of 43-year-old John Favreau of Massena about 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Favreau's snowmobile broke through the ice about 50 yards from shore in about 18 feet of water. Ice in the area was two to four inches thick.

Family members told authorities that Favreau left Monday afternoon to go ice fishing and didn't return. Tuesday's search had to be suspended in the afternoon because of unsafe ice conditions.
