High winds derail ski lift

JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt. -

A lift evacuation Sunday at Smugglers Notch.

About 70 people were left stranded on the Madonna 2 lift Sunday after high winds caused the chair to derail.  Rescuers say it happened around 2:30 p.m.  About 30 rescue personnel helped in the evacuation which took just under 1.5 hours to complete. No one was injured during the evacuation -- organizers credit good training and good staff for the success.

"We practice it every year. We have a full training weekend at the beginning of the year where we practice it, and then periodically during the year," said Steve Wry, with Smugglers Notch.

Wry said in the 25 years he's worked at the mountain this is just the second time he's had to conduct a lift evacuation.
