Vt. environmental groups lay out agenda for year

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Environmental advocates will lobby legislators to act on a series of five energy issues this session.

In a news conference Tuesday morning, a coalition of seven groups touted the need for more investment in weatherization, blocking any plans for transport of tar sands through Vermont and continued support for renewable energy sources.

Spokespeople say they would also like to see the state help build an infrastructure to support electric vehicles and fully fund the Clean Energy Development Fund.

"It's crucial that we maintain Vermont's progress on number one in green jobs, making sure we keep our hard-earned dollars in state, going to Vermonters for clean energy for efficient, wise use of our resources and to continue supporting life on our planet," said Gabrielle Stebbins of Renewable Energy Vermont.

Advocates say for every $1 invested in efficiency and renewable energy, the state sees at least a $4 return.

A spokesperson for Vermont Energy Investment Corporation says such an investment could slash statewide heating costs by nearly $1.5 billion.
