Was it live or lip-synced? Questions about inauguration music

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

A Vermonter led the U.S. Marine band during the president's inauguration Monday, accompanying stars like Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce. But now there are questions about whether the band or Beyonce were actually performing live.

Col. Michael Colburn of Franklin County conducted the band. He graduated from BFA-St. Albans.

Tuesday morning, the London Times reported Beyonce lip-synced the national anthem while the band pretended to play. Then, a spokeswoman for the Marine Corps band said the singer lip-synced while the band performed live. Now, the Marine Corp is backing off, saying a live performance by the band was ill-advised because Beyonce didn't rehearse with the band. The Marine Corps also says no one in the band is in a position to know whether Beyonce's vocal performance was live or pre-recorded.

There is no dispute over Kelly Clarkson's performance. Her rendition of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" was performed live.
