The search continues for a man believed to be armed and dangerous following a standoff in Winooski.
Police learned a fugitive from New York City may have been hiding at an apartment house on LaFountain Street Tuesday night. He is wanted on weapons charges. The state police tactical team was called in for backup. Several nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.
"There is information pertaining to the target of the investigation that we are not prepared to release, but suffice it to say we are dealing with a person who has a dangerous criminal past that includes the use of firearms," Deputy Winooski Police Chief Rich Benoit said.
During the standoff, tear gas was fired into the apartment house. The SWAT team entered the home four hours after the standoff started and discovered the suspect was not inside.
They have not determined his relationship with the people who live at the apartment.
