Red Cross shelter open in Burlington

Posted: Updated:

The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter in Burlington because of the extreme overnight temperatures.

The shelter at the Champlain School opened after area shelters and emergency motel rooms afforded by the Agency of Human Services hit capacity last week.

So far, few people have come to stay at the temporary Red Cross shelter despite several people registering a spot in advance.

In the meantime, the Red Cross has used the empty shelter to train new emergency volunteers.

Larry Crist of the American Red Cross said, "90 plus percent of our staff are volunteers, your local neighbors. It's critical we have volunteers continuing to come into the system, receive the training they need so they can turn around and assist their neighbors in their communities."

The shelter will be open again Sunday night but will be closing Monday morning at six.
