COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont's largest power company is alerting customers that several attempts to scam customers over the phone have been reported.
Business customers of Green Mountain Power are getting the calls. The caller claims to be representing GMP and demands that the customer pay a bill by releasing credit card information or using other alternative payment methods. The caller also threatens that failure to comply will result in a power shut-off.
GMP officials say they would not ask a customer for credit card information, and that there appears to be an attempted phone scam going on.
The company says customers getting such calls should not provide the caller with any personal information, including account and credit card numbers, and should immediately contact the Vermont State Police or their local law enforcement agency.
