Penguin Plunge preview

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Burlington's mayor donned a swimsuit and took a dip in frigid Lake Champlain Monday.

The quick dunk was an effort to promote the upcoming Penguin Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics of Vermont.  More than 1,200 participants are expected.  They collect donations and then plunge into the freezing water.  This is the 18th year of the event, which takes place this Saturday on the Burlington waterfront.  It's expected to bring in about $400,000.

"The opportunity to come down here every single February and watch people jump in the lake is a tremendous benefit to us and to our athletes," said Lisa DeNatale with Special Olympics Vermont.

Registration for the plunge is still open.  There are also two others -- one in Bennington and another in Newport.
