Bill aims to get Vt. women equal pay

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont lawmakers will consider legislation to help ensure women have access to equal pay.

Attorney General Bill Sorrell joined lawmakers Tuesday in announcing the proposed legislation to strengthen current laws that prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of sex when paying their employees.

"And to make clear in law that one may not be discriminated against by making inquiries to try to determine whether there are illegal pay disparities in a given workforce," said Sorrell, D-Vt. Attorney General.

The bill would also more narrowly define the specific reasons employers can use to justify different pay between employees, and would require them to prove gender was not the reason.

Advocates say nationally, women make 78 cents for every dollar equally qualified men make; in Vermont, the figure is 84 cents.
