City Market slows Pine Street plan

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

City Market in Burlington is not opening a second location on Pine Street as soon as it once thought.

The co-op grocery store says it wants to expand to the city's South End. But it is waiting to see what happens with new plans for the Champlain Parkway, also known as the Southern Connector.

Market research says that Pine Street is the place to go, but the new connector road will have an impact. Co-op officials say they should know what their move will be in about two years.

In the meantime, City Market is going to start looking for one or two smaller locations, possibly in the North End. The smaller stores would let them test out systems for a larger store eventually.
