LONDONDERRY, Vt. -
If your mother ever warned you not to pick up hitchhikers, here's a good reason why: You could get your car stolen. That's what happened to a southern Vermont woman this week.
Police say Stacey Bonang picked up a young woman on Route 11 and gave her a ride to the Londonderry plaza. There, the hitchhiker asked Bonang to step out of the car so she could make a private cellphone call. That's when the hitchhiker turned into a thief, quickly locking the doors and then driving off in Bonang's Subaru.
The car was found the following morning crashed into a tree on Route 100 in Weston. Police are looking for the thief.
