MILTON, Vt. -
A close call Friday for a young man using Lake Champlain to improve his driving skills.
Nick Schmoll got a helping hand in pulling his car to dry land after it broke through the ice near the shoreline at the fishing access near the Champlain Island causeway in Milton.
The 16-year-old from Milton says he's an aspiring rally car driver and had been out on the ice practicing.
"I come here every day, pretty much. Before school, after school. I go drifting out here. I mean, I'm trying to get a sponsorship through Subaru. I want to become a rallier," Schmoll said.
Schmoll says he's not deterred and he plans to be back out practicing on the lake when the weather gets colder and the ice gets thicker.
