The No. 1-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team won its fourth straight game with a 5-0 shutout victory over New England College on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.
Senior forward Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.) scored two goals while classmate Tory Allan (Davidson, Sask.) chipped in with a goal and two assists and junior forward Travis Janke (Davidson, Sask.) tallied three assists to lead the Norwich (17-2-0, 12-1-0 ECAC East) offense on the night.
Freshman defenseman Erik Lyrvall (Falun, Sweden) scored his first collegiate goal and Nevin Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) also scored for NU to round out the Cadets' goal scorers.
Mulvey scored a goal in each of the first two periods to raise his team-leading total to 14 on the season. He struck first for the Cadets just 2:46 into the game when slid a shot through NEC goalie Shawn Sirman's five-hole from the middle of the slot on his back hand with his back turned to the net to make it 1-0 Norwich. Janke and Allan recorded assists on the goal.
Despite outshooting NEC 21-1 in the opening 20 minutes, Mulvey's goal was all the Cadets were able to muster in one of their best individual period performances of the season.
Mulvey finally solved Sirman again at the 5:48 mark of the second period when he worked a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play on a 3-on-2 odd man rush with Allan and Janke. Allan carried the puck into the zone on the right wing and slid the puck over to Mulvey streaking down the center of the ice. Mulvey dished the puck to his left to Janke and instead of shooting, Janke flipped the puck back over to Mulvey who one-timed a shot past Sirman to make it 2-0 Norwich.
The Cadets finally opened it up in the third period by tacking on three more goals, including two in a span of 25 seconds to comfortably pull away from the Pilgrims. Lawler scored his second of the season at the 8:50 mark when he slid a shot off a rebound behind Sirman after the NEC goalie made an initial save on Alec Thieda's (Rochester Hills, Mich.) shot from the point.
Just moments later Lyrvall blasted a shot from the near sideboards that clanged off three posts before trickling over the goal line to make it 4-0 Norwich. Janke picked up his third assist on the night, giving him a team-leading 20 helpers on the season on the goal.
Allan wrapped up the scoring by blasting a one timer over the shoulder of Sirman from the right faceoff circle on the power play to push the lead to 5-0 for Norwich. Lyrvall and Thieda picked up assists on the goal that came with 21 seconds left in the game.
Junior goalie Chris Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) stopped all 13 shots he faced to pick up his first shutout of the season and improve to 9-1-0. Sirman made 38 saves for NEC (7-12-2, 5-8-1 ECAC East) to fall to 6-11-2 on the year.
Norwich continues its four-game home stand tomorrow afternoon when the Cadets host Saint Anselm College at 4 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena.
