A grateful patient surprised her heart surgeon with a $1 million gift to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
The anonymous donor was a patient of Dr. Frank Ittleman. The money will be used to establish a professorship in the doctor's name at the University of Vermont College of Medicine.
Ittleman said professorships attract top tier doctors and the interest generated from the donation will help pay salaries, upgrade labs and fund research. "It certainly came at the right time for this institution and for our patients because medicine is changing and we have no idea, in a way, how money is going to be allocated to health care and we have a private donor of this enormous generosity -- it's just a win win for everybody," he said.
The gift was also inspired by a Stowe couple's $1 million gift this summer to advance cardiology research at the hospital and university.
