Prosecutor drops plan to probe Guard sex assault claims

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A probe into an alleged sex assault involving a member of the National Guard has been dropped.

The allegation came to light as part of the Vermont adjutant general's race. A woman circulated an anonymous letter claiming she was sexually assaulted by a senior guard officer in 2007. After hearing about the letter, Chittenden County Prosecutor T.J. Donovan contacted the writer, but Donovan says the woman does not want to go forward with prosecution. He says without a victim, the case would be too difficult to prosecute.
