Ethics probe into Rep. Owens continues

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Ethics investigators on Capitol Hill are not ready to clear New York Congressman Bill Owens of any wrongdoing.

Owens of Plattsburgh went on a trip three years ago to Taiwan. He paid for it after the fact.

Politico is reporting the House Ethics Committee decided to continue to review the matter, but not launch a formal investigation. The article goes on to say that an independent panel found evidence suggesting Owens may have broken House rules and federal law by letting the government of Taiwan initially pay for the trip.

Owens' released a statement on the probe, saying, "This is the next step in the process and I expect that ultimately it will result in an affirmation of my position that the trip was undertaken in the quest for jobs for my constituents and was done with every intention to comply with all applicable rules."
