Pretty petunias

Posted: Updated:

At the Pleasant View Greenhouses in Loudon, N.H., they are one of the growers of the Proven Winners series of flowers. There's 23 petunia varieties that are lined up in their demonstration area from the most favorite to the least favorite!

But even the least favorites are pretty nice!

They are displayed on the ground, against the wall and in window boxes. There are lots of great colors. If you are looking for a way to figure out what color you want, come to a place like Pleasant View for ideas! Now their number one leader in sales is 'Royal Velvet'. It has a beautiful deep purple, velvety kind of flower. Many of the petunia flowers have the same color, just in different shades.

For example there is the 'Citrus' variety that has yellow colored flowers. It starts out as a deeper yellow and then fades to a paler yellow. 'Raspberry Blast' has almost swirls of raspberry colors within the flower. It's a real nice one to have. And 'Vista Silverberry' is a nice one too, because it has pink colors that descend down creating a really dark throat.

Now if you are looking for something a little bit different, try some doubles!  'Priscilla' is a purple double that's really kind of nice. And then here's one of my favorites it's a pink one called 'Cotton Candy'. It literally looks like it could jump right out of the planting bed it's so bright and vibrant.

There are the Supertunias, too. They are different from regular petunias because they're self cleaning, more compact and they flower unabashedly all summer long. You've got to love that!

So whether they are going to be in a container, a window box or in the ground, Supertunias are a great petunia type to have as an annual flower. The biggest problem is choosing which one! Maybe just get them all!
