Tightening the rules for downtown bars

Posted: Updated:
RUTLAND, Vt. -

The City of Rutland is one step closer to banning underage entry to downtown bars.

The Rutland Board of Alderman is moving to ban 18 and up nights in the city. The move comes after recent noise complaints at The Local, which is the only bar in the city that allows under 21 admittance.

The board unanimously voted to send the new ordinance to committee in order to close a loop hole in the city's liquor law that allows anyone under 21 into bars. Aldermen say young adults and alcohol do not mix.

Dave Allaire, from the Board of Aldermen said, "It looks as though the board, at least the committee, made a decision that they want to tighten up the rules and make it a policy that the city does not condone that."

Allaire expects that the ordinance will unanimously pass at the Aldermen's next meeting.
