WCAX poll: Fiddleheads are top choice for state vegetable

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Kale is not the first choice to become the state's vegetable.

That's according to a non-scientific poll conducted by WCAX.com.

A bill was introduced in the Vermont vegetable that would allow kale to become the state's "official" vegetable. Last week, WCAX.com asked readers to vote in a web based poll. There were multiple choices and 3,736 people participated in the informal poll. Kale came in second place.

The winner was the wild edible, with fiddleheads receiving more 46 percent of the vote.  Kale was second with 18 percent. Rhubarb received 16 percent and 11 percent wanted another "unnamed" vegetable. Potatoes received 4 percent of the votes and peas finished last with 2 percent of the vote.

It's unclear if the bill will get a full hearing in Montpelier, considering it's one of the lighter issues facing policy-makers at the statehouse.
