Property tax increase up for debate

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont property taxes will go up if a new measure receives the support of legislators.

The House Ways and Means Committee voted in favor of raising the property tax for primary residences by 5 cents and other properties by 6 cents.

Income tax rates would remain largely unaffected under the scenario.

State budget experts say taxpayer costs can't be accurately predicted until towns solidify local budgets.

"Local control really drives the spending decisions, so what we do at the statewide level is figure out how we're going to pay for these forecasted decisions that will actually be made at the local level," Vt. Tax Commissioner Mary Peterson said.

The committee introduced House Bill 265 Wednesday, and the bill has been placed on the calendar.
