There was reason to celebrate at the Vermont Statehouse Wednesday afternoon-- this week marks the 100th anniversary of the University of Vermont Extension Program.
UVM President Thomas Sullivan, faculty, students and lawmakers marked the milestone together. The Agriculture Extension Service was founded in 1913. It helps Vermonters create healthy communities by taking on environmental and agricultural challenges on and off the farm.
"Taking education from UVM or another land grant university and bringing it into communities and helping people make better decisions that improve their lives, I think that's the reason we are still here after 100 years," said Doug Lantagne, of the UVM Extension Service.
Right now, folks with the extension program are researching ways to improve the nutritional value of milk and track emissions from charter buses.
Also in the works-- a smartphone application aimed at helping farmers track fertilizer and manure that makes its way off their land.
