Vermont's senior senator is pushing legislation to protect same-sex, binational couples from deportation.
Frances Herbert and Takako Ueda of Dummerston got a letter from Immigration officials threatening to deport Ueda back to her native Japan because of an expired visa.
The proposed legislation would halt such deportations, allowing Americans to sponsor their same-sex "permanent partners" who are immigrants for permanent residency.
President Obama supports the bill. There are an estimated 36,000 same-sex, binational couples in the country.
