Getting Winooski students tuned in to music

Posted: Updated:

The entire student body of the JFK Elementary school in Winooski took a field trip Friday to the Elley-Long Music Center in Colchester. It is part of an ongoing partnership between the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association and the school to introduce children to classical music and stringed instruments. Music director Jeff Domoto says this project was started after the VYOA noticed there were no students from Winooski enrolled in any of their programs. And he said developing yourself musically is an essential human right.

"You look at every culture in the world and music plays an important role, so everyone should, I think, as a child get the training and tools to express themselves musically to engage musically and be able to come to music and love everything about it," Domoto said.

The VYOA has also started an after-school string program at JFK Elementary School.
