Vt. farm, forest advocates lobby for more state money

Posted: Updated:

Supporters of a statewide coalition to expand Vermont's working landscape are asking for expanded funding.

A measure approved by lawmakers last year created a $1.5 million fund and a Working Lands Enterprise Board to oversee those funds. The goal is to stimulate economic development in the agriculture and forest products sectors. Grants will be used as seed money to help existing business or new startups grow.

"The governor's proposed $1.5 million and we deeply appreciate his leadership and vision around this topic, but the coalition is dedicated to taking this to a transformative level. It will impact hundreds of businesses and really support the next generation's success on the land in Vermont," said Paul Costello of the Vt. Council on Rural Development.

Lawmakers supporting the effort have not identified where they expect to find the requested $15 million over a three-year period that the coalition is seeking.
