SHOREHAM, Vt. -
The state says WhistlePig Whiskey in Shoreham is not considered a farm and needs an Act 250 permit.
WhistlePig, which currently bottles whiskey from Canada, is converting a barn into a distillery in hopes of eventually making its own whiskey on site.
To be exempt from an Act 250 permit, more than 50 percent of the whiskey's ingredients must be grown on the farm. The state ruled WhistlePig is not a farm because its main ingredient is water.
WhistlePig has been operating without an Act 250 permit for two years. The company says this ruling is bad for value-added agriculture in Vermont.
