NEWPORT, N.H. (AP) - The planning board in Newport, N.H., has unanimously approved an application to build a new gun range.
The plan approved Tuesday to develop the 64 acres in an industrial zone is a joint venture between Sturm Ruger and the Mountain View Gun Club.
Sturm Ruger, which employs 1,200 people at its Newport plant, made an offer in October to buy the land.
The board's list of conditions included the banning of operation on Sundays and holidays, with the exception of six random Sundays. It also limits ammunition used at the range to under .50 caliber.
Some people expressed concerns about noise levels, loss of property values and environmental damage.
The Newport Safety Coalition said it plans to appeal the decision. They have 30 days to do so.
