Leahy meets with jailed American in Cuba

HAITI -

Senator Patrick Leahy is in Haiti after a trip to Cuba to try to free an American jailed there-- but it appears the two countries are no closer to a deal.

Leahy and five other senators met with Cuban president Raul Castro and top officials to talk about freeing Alan Gross, a U.S. contractor currently serving a 15-year sentence for installing internet in the communist-run country under a secretive U.S. program.

Before leaving Cuba, Vermont's senior senator visited Gross at the Havana military hospital where he's being held.

"I think that Mr. Gross would be a lot better off if he could be home. I hope the day will come soon that he can be home," said Leahy, D-Vermont.

While no deal was reached, the U.S. delegation says the meetings were encouraging. Cuba has said it wants to exchange Gross for five of their intelligence agents imprisoned here in the U.S. Washington says there won't be a swap.
