Vt. House gives final approval to property tax hikes

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont House has given final approval to increases in the statewide school property tax.

Thursday's action - if the Senate concurs - means the statewide school property tax will go up 5 cent, to 94 cents per $100 of value for primary residences. Commercial and vacation properties will see their rate climb 6 cents, to $1.44.

The action came after lawmakers rejected a proposal from Rep. Heidi Scheuermann, a Stowe Republican, to scrap Vermont's current school funding system.

Scheuermann's amendment called for creating a new school funding system by the 2015-2016 school year. It was replaced by one offered by Rep. William Lippert, a Democrat of Hinesburg, that calls on the House Ways and Means Committee to study Vermont's school funding system and recommend improvements.
