MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The state is issuing less moose permits for the upcoming hunting season.

Vermont Fish and Wildlife is giving preliminary approval for 355 permits, down slightly from 385 permits last year.

They will also issue 50 archery permits for the first week in October. Officials expect hunters to net around 200 moose during the five-day season in mid-Cctober. They estimate there are up to 3,000 moose in the state, most of them in the northeast kingdom.

Fish and Wildlife says they are dropping permit numbers to allow slow population growth.

You can apply for the hunting lottery starting in May.
