Leahy pushes for improved U.S.-Cuban relations

Posted: Updated:

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy is pushing for a re-set in relations with Cuba.

Leahy just wrapped up a trip to Havana where he tried to win the release of Alan Gross, an American serving a 15-year-prison sentence for bringing communications equipment to the island illegally. Leahy tells CNN's "State of the Union" that it's time to re-examine the U.S.-Cuban relationship and move on from a "Cold War mentality."

"We have a number of issues we should be looking at.  We have them on a terrorist  list -- it makes no sense.  They've been working to help Columbians on the issue of FARC -- they've been very effective.  They've worked with us on drug interdiction.  There are a lot of things -- the embargo is an obvious one.  I mean the idea that you and I have to get permission to go to Cuba from our own government -- it makes no sense," Leahy said.

Leahy also told CNN he supports background checks at gun shows and that he hopes to get an immigration reform bill this session with the help of Republicans.
