Climbers rescued from Mount Washington

Posted: Updated:

CAMPTON, N.H. (AP) - Rescue workers have come to the aid of three stranded climbers on Mount Washington.

The climbers were ascending a gully in the Huntington Ravine in the fog and snow of the developing Nor'easter on Saturday when they traveled off route.

The U.S. Forest Service says the climbers' new course brought them into more difficult technical rock climbing when they were unable to continue. The Forest Service received a 911 call from them that evening.

It took several hours for responders to reach the scene. Using ropes and technical equipment, responders assisted the three to the top of the ravine and up to the Weather Observatory's waiting Snowcat on the Mount Washington Auto Road.

The group arrived back at the base of the mountain at about 4 a.m. Sunday.
